Why Sean the Architect? Bear with me for a second.
Although my career has taken me into tech and product management, when I was a youth, maybe seven or eight, I wanted to be one of two things; a ball player, but I’m 5’3” and I can’t jump like Muggsy Bogues, so scratch that shit! I also wanted to be an artist. Back then, I loved anime so much that I would draw my own characters and pretend they were in Dragon Ball Z-like worlds. As I got older, my love for math and science grew and I started to think seriously about career paths. Eventually, I landed on architecture for a career.
Architecture caught my eye as history is full of famous architects who have shaped the path of entire communities – shoutout Robert Robinson Taylor! The structural and design elements clicked with my way of thinking as well. But as I learned about the money, I learned most of these folks were broke as hell and had to get extra school to get there. Like many of us who have to make “business decisions”, it just made more sense for me to become a civil engineer. This would allow me to still be a part of making buildings happen, but in a role that wouldn’t have me penny-pinching the rest of my life.
But I didn’t give up! In college, I took a bunch of art and architectural history courses that spoke to me. Despite my career choices, the endless battle between form and function was burned into my brain. And for a hot second, function won! But for me, the purpose of function is to create space for form. Does the canvas have purpose without paint?
TLDR; “Sean the Architect” is my opportunity to contribute my color, culture and politics to the world. It’s a place for me to get out my thoughts, share about my community building efforts re: Book Club! As I spend time in my life to broaden my horizons and activities, especially in the arts, starting this blog only feels natural. Readers will find posts about the books I read, thoughts on modern-day culture, especially as it relates to black men, my dreams and efforts to uplift the diaspora, and my deepening passion for science fiction with an emphasis on Afrofuturism.
Even if you just read one word, I appreciate your support as I grow in this journey.
Take care,
Sean the Architect
